Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Race Heats Up: NDA Moves MLAs to Resort, INDIA Bloc Holds Mock Polls

Ranchi (IANS): Political drama in Jharkhand peaked on Tuesday ahead of the June 18 Rajya Sabha elections for two seats, as a surprise three-way contest triggered aggressive counter-strategies, hotel enclosures, and mock voting exercises from both camps.

NDA Secures Legislators at Luxury Hotel

To insulate its camp against potential cross-voting, the BJP-led NDA moved its legislators into the Radisson Blu hotel in Ranchi on Tuesday.

  • The Setup: The alliance booked 32 rooms until June 18. High-profile leaders, including BJP legislature leader Babulal Marandi, checked into the facility alongside Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, whom the NDA is backing.
  • The Strategy: The alliance plans to keep its flock tightly knit, with all MLAs scheduled to travel directly from the hotel to the State Assembly together on polling day.

INDIA Bloc Simulates Voting Process

Simultaneously, the ruling INDIA bloc launched rigorous internal preparations at the Chief Minister’s official residence.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren convened strategy meetings with alliance legislators, scheduling mandatory mock polling sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. The exercises aim to eliminate technical errors and familiarize MLAs with preferential voting rules to secure both of their nominated candidates: Baijnath Ram (JMM) and Pranav Jha (Congress).

The Numbers Game

Under the current arithmetic of the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, a candidate requires roughly 28 first-preference votes to clinch a seat.

Alliance / Candidate Current MLA Strength Deficit / Surplus Status
INDIA Bloc (Ram & Jha) Claims comfortable majority Confident of winning both seats
NDA Alliance (Nathwani) 25 MLAs (including 21 BJP) Needs 3 extra votes to pull off an upset

The Wildcard Factor: Independent challenger Parimal Nathwani is actively lobbying all 81 lawmakers, appealing to their “conscience” for cross-party support. Nathwani previously pulled off cross-party victories from Jharkhand in 2008 and 2014, making his current bid a serious threat to the ruling coalition’s math.
