Jharkhand jails need to reduce load: Jharkhand HC CJ Sanjay Kumar Mishra

Jamshedpur: Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra said that the burden on the jails is increasing. There are three times more accused behind bars than the capacity, it needs to be reduced. There are people in the jail who have not been convicted and convicts who have already been convicted are also serving their sentences there. Both are placed together in the same situation. This needs to be looked into. He was addressing the ‘Regional Conference on Remand and Bail Jurisprudence’ organised by the Judicial Academy, Jharkhand and East Singhbhum Jurisprudence as the chief guest on Sunday.
In this conference held at Loyola School, the Chief Justice said that this is only possible if other than serious cases are considered before going to judicial custody. It is necessary for the judicial officers to inspect the prisons to know the conditions there. Justice Mishra said that before remand, the courts have to decide with discretion considering the circumstances of the case and the immediate evidence. Justice should be accessible and easy.
The day-long program mainly discussed various legal aspects related to remand and bail. Detailed information was given on how to remove the obstacles in the settlement of POCSO Act 2012 and NDPS cases, so that the victim gets quick and speedy justice.
In the programme, Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad said that he has the right to decide who can be remanded and who cannot, so the judiciary has to take a decision immediately. High Court judges Justice Ratnakar Bhengra, Justice Deepak Roshan, Justice Ambuj Nath etc. were present in the conference.
