Jamshedpur, Feb 25: Wall climbing facility at JRD Tata Sports Complex has gained popularity during the Tata Steel Sport Climbing Championship 2022 which concludes tomorrow. The technical experts have travelled from all over India to assist this sporting event conclude successfully.
The finals of lead and bouldering took place today. Jharkhand cadets won 28 medals in the speed, bouldering and lead category. Cadets bagged 12 medals in lead category, 11 in bouldering and 5 medals in speed category.
Belaying is an important aspect of Lead Climbing. When a candidate climbs a height of about 10 mtrs or more, it is a necessity to ensure that he/she lands safely on the crash-pad. A lead wall has a certain number of handholds and footholds, arranged in an order decided by route-setters. Every handhold is allotted certain points. The judges have to be on their toes to ensure their eyes do not miss out on any handhold being touched by the athlete. What was more interesting was the minimal size of footholds. Arm strength, a good core and regular practice are the secret to reaching the top.
The championship has been an eye opener for many parents about the potential of their kids. A mother of a candidate said “There is also a future in sports, one can build his/her future by playing sports a career. So parents should encourage their children for sports other than studying.” It is wonderful to see parents getting more and more involved in sports. The awareness has increased, the infrastructure is developing, and the spirit of sportsmanship is growing. More than 350 athletes, officials, coaches have participated from more than 10 states.
