Jamshedpur: The state is set to experience a spell of unstable and potentially hazardous weather over the next three days, as a well-marked low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal continues to influence atmospheric conditions across the region. According to the latest bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), residents should prepare for thunderstorms, gusty winds, and bouts of heavy rainfall, especially in the northeastern and southeastern districts.
The weather disturbance, located off the Odisha coast, remained stationary as of 8:30 AM on May 28. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, with a noticeable southward tilt. Meteorologists predict that this system is likely to intensify into a depression over the North Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, raising concerns over increased rainfall intensity and wider geographic impact in the days ahead.
Thunderstorms and lightning are expected to lash isolated areas across the state, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph. The IMD has also issued warnings for heavy rainfall in specific northeastern and southeastern pockets, which could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruption of outdoor activities.
May 30: The unstable weather pattern is predicted to persist, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) forecasted at isolated locations statewide. The northeastern districts once again face the possibility of localized heavy rainfall.
May 31: Conditions are expected to remain unchanged, with thunderstorms and lightning likely at various places across the state, supported by gusty winds around 30–40 kmph.
The IMD also noted the presence of an additional upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Madhya Pradesh at about 1.5 km above mean sea level, which is contributing further to the existing atmospheric instability across the eastern belt of India. This complex interplay of weather systems could intensify convection activity and prolong wet conditions into the early days of June.
Authorities are urging citizens, particularly those residing in rural and semi-urban areas vulnerable to flooding and infrastructure damage, to stay vigilant and updated with real-time alerts through official weather bulletins.
