Jamshedpur: Amid the rising heat of the Jharkhand Municipal Elections 2026, a significant political rift has surfaced within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Seraikela district. In a move that signals internal resistance, the party has stepped back from formally supporting the preferred candidates of former Chief Minister Champai Soren.
Fearing a massive rebellion within its district unit, the BJP leadership decided not to extend formal support to Champai’s close aides, Sanand Acharya (contesting from Seraikela Nagar Panchayat) and Sunita Liangy (contesting from Adityapur Municipal Corporation).
The Threat of Mass Resignations
According to party sources, the prospect of backing Champai Soren’s loyalists triggered an uproar among veteran BJP leaders in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district. A powerful local leader and his supporters reportedly issued a stern warning to the state leadership: If the party formally endorsed Champai’s faction, a significant majority of the district committee would tender a collective resignation.
This influential leader argued that prioritizing the “Champai camp” over grassroots workers who have served the party for years would cause irreparable damage to the organization. Sensing a potential collapse of the local unit, the state leadership eventually prioritized the local cadre’s sentiment over Champai Soren’s requests.
Champai Soren’s Waning Influence?
This development has reportedly left Champai Soren disgruntled. Since joining the BJP ahead of the 2024 Assembly elections, this was the first major opportunity for him to secure organizational backing for his loyalists.
This setback follows a difficult period for the former CM. Earlier, he had to lobby hard to secure a ticket for his son, Babulal Soren, for the Ghatshila Assembly by-election—an effort that ultimately failed to send his son to the Assembly.
The Road Ahead: Limited Options
The current friction highlights a clash of political styles. Observers note that even during his tenure in the JMM, Champai was often accused of focusing on building a personal support base rather than adhering to party discipline. His attempt to run a “party within a party” in the BJP is now facing stiff resistance from long-time saffron party loyalists in the Kolhan region.
With the doors of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) virtually closed to him, Champai Soren faces a challenging political crossroads. His inability to secure support for his candidates in the municipal polls raises serious questions about his future leverage within the BJP hierarchy and his long-term strategy in Jharkhand politics.
