RANCHI: In a major move to decentralize and modernize the state’s medical infrastructure, Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari has announced the establishment of 245 Block Public Health Units (BPHUs) across Jharkhand. Backed by a total investment of ₹205 crore, this landmark initiative is designed to bring advanced clinical services and disease surveillance directly to every assembly constituency. The project prioritizes strengthening healthcare access for tribal, remote, and underserved communities that have historically faced barriers to quality medical care.
A Decentralized Hub for Grassroots Healthcare
These new units are set to transform the way health services are delivered at the block level. Each BPHU will function as an integrated hub, combining an existing community health center or block primary health center with a dedicated public health laboratory and a management information system cell. This structure creates a localized platform for emergency preparedness and coordinated responses to health crises. By shifting the focus from centralized city hospitals to block-level facilities, the state aims to ensure that life-saving interventions are available right at the doorstep of rural residents.
Strengthening Disease Surveillance and Diagnostics
Dr. Ansari highlighted that the BPHUs will serve as the backbone for rapid response during disease outbreaks. By housing specialized laboratories, these units will provide high-quality diagnostics and accurate data, allowing health officials to implement evidence-based interventions quickly. This shift is expected to improve accountability within the system and enhance both the technical and non-technical aspects of patient care. The integration with digital health systems and platforms like ESIC will further streamline the patient experience, making the healthcare journey more efficient for the average citizen.
Building a Resilient Public Health Model
The program is a strategic component of the Prime Minister’s Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) and is supported by the 15th Finance Commission. This investment marks a historic transition toward a citizen-centric model that emphasizes long-term resilience. As Jharkhand rolls out these 245 units, it positions itself as a national leader in decentralized health governance. The ultimate goal is to create a robust protection shield for every village, ensuring that quality healthcare is no longer a privilege of the urban elite but a fundamental right for every resident of the state.
