JBVNL proposes 25% Electricity Tariff hike, consumers brace for impact

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) has submitted a fresh electricity tariff petition and Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) for the financial year 2024-25 to the Jharkhand Electricity Regulatory Commission. With an estimated expense of Rs 10,800 crore, the JBVNL is seeking a tariff hike of around 25% to meet its financial needs, as outlined in the petition.
While the detailed blueprint of the proposed tariff increase on a category basis is yet to be disclosed, sources indicate an overall surge of 25%. The JBVNL is expected to present a comprehensive plan for electricity rate adjustments to the Commission in the near future. Traditionally, the JBVNL files its electricity tariff petition on November 30 each year.

The Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission is set to initiate the public hearing process on JBVNL’s tariff for the financial year 2023-24, possibly starting in the first week of December. Speculations suggest that the Commission might conduct hearings for both financial years simultaneously, paving the way for a unified electricity tariff structure.

Among the proposed changes, the tariff for domestic consumers may witness a Rs 2.30 per unit increase, with substantial hikes in fixed charges also on the table. For urban domestic consumers currently paying Rs 6.30/unit, the proposed rate is Rs 8.60/unit for those consuming over 400 units. Consumers using up to 400 units may face a rate increase from Rs 6.30 to Rs 7.60/unit.
Consumers currently benefit from various subsidy and free schemes based on their electricity consumption levels, including free electricity on the first 100 units and subsidies for consumption between 100-200 units and 201-400 units. No subsidy is provided for consumption above 400 units. As consumers brace for potential electricity bill hikes, the Commission’s decision following public hearings will play a crucial role in shaping the future of electricity tariffs in Jharkhand.
