Chaibasa: A tragic incident has been reported from West Singhbhum district, where a jawan of the district police force died when his service rifle accidentally discharged inside a CRPF camp. The incident took place at a camp located in the Tonto police station area, sending shockwaves across the police establishment.
The deceased has been identified as Ajay Kishore Khakha. According to officials, the incident occurred on Sunday evening while the jawan was engaged in routine cleaning of his INSAS rifle during duty hours. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Raphael Murmu confirmed that the shot was accidentally fired, possibly due to a technical fault or inadvertent trigger press.
The sudden sound of gunfire created panic inside the camp, prompting fellow personnel to rush to the spot. Ajay Kishore Khakha was found in a wounded condition, but he succumbed to his injuries before any medical assistance could be provided. Officials stated that the injury was severe and proved fatal instantly. The jawan was a native of the Raidih area in Gumla district.
Taking serious note of the incident, Superintendent of Police Amit Renu and other senior officials reached the camp late at night and conducted a detailed inspection of the site. The body has been sent to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the case appears to be one of accidental discharge. However, the police have initiated a thorough probe to ascertain the exact cause behind the firing. Authorities are also examining whether there was any technical malfunction in the weapon or a lapse in safety procedures.
