Jamshedpur, March 7: For some, work is synonymous with mental and physical weariness while for some others, it is the adrenalin to do and achieve satisfaction by delving into social causes. This, perhaps, is the motto that underlines the will to serve people, especially those who are the children of a lesser god being denied their right to live decently. Taking up cudgels for them are some people or groups who are determined to reignite hope among humans who are resigned to their half-fed, half-clothed fate.
One such person who makes out time and zestfully plunges into activities of human uplift after regular work is Radio Jockey Smita of 93.5 Red FM whose soothing, pleasantly modulated yet emphatic voice ushers in the peppy mood for radio listeners in the morning while sipping the first cup of tea. Smita’s fans, and there are many, will vouch that she mixes entertainment with vital information updates that go for a heady infotainment that either sticks or lingers in listeners’ minds.
Smita observed, “People basically live for themselves but try and live for others and feel the inner bliss that is beyond all expressions of joy.” And that is RJ Smita’s thumb rule that keeps her energetic 24×7.
Smita currently does the morning programme from 7 am on 93.5 Red FM where she ‘creates’ the ‘Happy Morning’ mood with songs, chirpy chats that are at once informative and entertaining. She mixes news, views and songs in an exciting cocktail that delights and informs without any element of ennui creeping into the programme she expertly broadcasts. During poll times, this unique RJ gives out the do’s and don’ts for voters, provides vital traffic tips and never lets an occasion go to waste when it comes to topics on women and youth empowerment.
Catching up with Smita during an ‘off air’ break, one got to understand the fulcrum of this RJ’s philosophy when she observed matter-of-factly, “Who says that after performing through the job schedule, one cannot give time to family or society? Where there is a will, there is always a way be it in the realms of social service or proving ones personal success.”
With loads of experience as an RJ through years, Smita is going great guns in social work. Initially, she undertook social causes alone but in time, formed a group of similar minded folks. Thus was formed an NGO, ‘Mitra Healthy Humanity,’ a team dedicated especially to the cause of socio economic bottom-rungers. Her driving spirit is decipherable behind the microphone and away from it. Her NGO team provides help as per requirements of communities. Recently, under the leadership of Smita, ‘Mitra Healthy Humanity’ adopted Sanatanpur village in Govindpur. Many projects have been taken up and executed for Sanatanpur villagers. One of them beamed as she said, “It is because of Smita Didi’s efforts that all households here have reaped the benefits of Ujjwala scheme.”
This has been only a part of the several other projects including medical and blood donation camps that are regular features of ‘Mitra Healthy Humanity.’
During the COVID-19 wave, Smita and her NGO distributed dry rations and food continuously through 55 days. Policemen on duty were provided water, snacks and masks by members of ‘Mitra Healthy Humanity.’
RJ Smita’s dedication to human causes did not go unnoticed. Her NGO, during the Kerala disaster, sent food grains, clothes and other essentials through Indian Red Cross Society. She was honoured by the then Deputy Commissioner, Amit Kumar. Smita’s active contribution through her radio channel, Red FM, towards traffic awareness and vital safety tips during Durgotsav was lauded by the then Jamshedpur SSPs Anup T Matthew and Anup Birthare. Besides, several social organizations have honoured Smita for her humanitarian acts.
But despite the loads of appreciations and awards for her selfless devotion to man, Smita remains rooted to the ground. The RJ behind Red FM is undeniably the hot favourite of radio listeners; her passion for reaching out to the less fortunate segment finds a voice in the smiles of relief on the faces of these denizens. That, perhaps, is God’s way of doling out succor to the needy through a package of humanity spelt: SMITA.
