Jamshedpur’s much hyped Nagadih lynching accused arrested after four years

Jamshedpur, March 21: In a breakthrough, two accused in the infamous Nagadih lynching case were arrested on Sunday about four years after the gruesome incident that took place at Nagadih village under Bagbera police station on May 18, 2017.

Those arrested have been identified as Mahi Singh Sardar alias Mahin and Ravi Bhumij, both residents of Nagadih village.

OC, Bagbera police station, Rajesh Kumar Singh said that the two accused who were arrested on Sunday were the last two named accused to be arrested from their houses in Nagadih.

“We were hunting for the accused ever since the incident took place. The two accused for their arrest despite the fact that they were absconding. Acting on a tip off that the duo had returned to their houses and as soon as we got the information, we raided their houses and arrested them immediately, ” said the OC.

Singh pointed out that there were 31 named accused beside over 200 unnamed accused in the case that had rocked the steel city in May 2017. He said the remaining 28 accused were either arrested or surrendered in the court earlier.

The OC, when queried, said that the police have already submitted charge-sheet in the court, adding that those arrested today have been sent to Ghaghidih Central Jail in the evening.

In May,2017 three innocent youths were killed under jurisdiction of Baghbera Police Station by a mob. The petitioner advocate Madan Mohan Priye approached the NHRC and sought its intervention. NHRC after studying the plea on May 3 issued notice to the State for compensation.

Three youths Vikash Verma, Gautam Verma (both brothers) and their friend Gangesh Gupta were lynched by the Nagadih villagers on May 18 night while an elderly lady Devi (grandmother of Vikash an Gautam) was grievously injured by the mob suspecting them to be child-lifters.

The angry mob which lynched the four persons had suspected Vikash, Gautam and another brother, Uttam Verma to be child-lifters whereas the three brothers were scouting for customer for their septic tank business.

The hearing of the mob lynching case is currently underway at the Jamshedpur court and on the complaint of Uttam Verma, brother of the deceased, case has been lodged against Mukhiya Rajaram Hansdah, gram pradhan Jagat Mardi, Sunil Sardar, Dr Mardi, Gulam Sardar, Gopal, Subhash Sardar, Babu Mandal, Ganesh Mandal, Leda Murmu, Rajesh Tuddu and others. 

Significantly, four police men including the thana OC, Amish Hussain were suspended over this incident.
