Jamshedpur : The city-based magician Kingshuk Kumar took to streets driving blindfolded and spreading awareness on traffic rules. Kingshuk drove around eight km starting from Nicco Jubilee Amusement Park reaching the Sakchi roundabout via The Bengal Club.
Kumar (46) who has been in the profession from past four decades believes in performing stunts that would not only attract the audience but also educate them socially. He wrapped his eyes with sand, glass pieces and salt to inspire others to follow traffic guidelines and drive safe in the city.
Industrialist Bikash Mukherjee flagged off the ride from the Nicco Jubilee Amusement Park in Sakchi that supported the drive. Kingshuk was accompanied by Ayan Mukherjee, who guided him on turnings and potholes.
Though it was a stunt, Kingshuk made it a point to wear helmet as a sign to inspire others to wear safety gears. Also he followed the traffic rules while driving that involved little things like using the horn, correctly overtaking a vehicle, using indicators etc.
Taking the Straight Mile Road he went to the Bistupur rouandabout and headed towards Kadma, Sonari and culminated his awareness drive at the starting point.
“The purpose of this campaign was to reiterate the safety norms to avoid road accidents. It motivated people to adhere to road safety norms and inspire road safety violators reminding them that these norms were for their own personal safety.
“I know it is a stunt but I want people to know that if a magician can follow rules and wear helmet why not they. The message conveyed through the awareness drive was urging others to follow traffic rules.
If a blinfolded man can follow simple traffic rules why can’t people who can see everything,” said Kingshuk.
Kingshuk has tried this for the fourth time as a public awareness. The first time he tried this in the city was in 2008 followed by Kolkata in 2010 and Patna in 2011. Kingshuk also made a point to drive his bike at 20 kmph, slow enough to avoid accidents.
He said that making people understand the importance of traffic rules is a major challenge which needs to be checked immediately. The magician said that parents must cooperate with the traffic authorities in order to ensure violation-free passage of traffic in the city.
” It is an ambitious initiative and we want to make people see that they are the sufferers of traffic violations. We have also written to SAFE Club of Jamshedpur, which inculcates road safety values amongst school students, and also to different school to extend their support by giving student’s volunteers below age of six for such drive,” said
a traffic official.
