Jamshedpur’s gas shift fuels industrial revival

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, April 5: Amid global fuel uncertainties and rising supply disruptions, Adityapur—Asia’s largest industrial hub—is undergoing a decisive energy transition.
With LPG shortages and volatile crude markets impacting production, industries in the region are steadily shifting to Piped Natural Gas (PNG), powered by the expanding network of GAIL (India) Limited.

The transition is not merely a response to crisis but a strategic move towards efficiency, sustainability, and cost control.

GAIL has developed a robust, multi-tier gas distribution infrastructure across Adityapur, transforming the region’s industrial energy landscape.

According to company officials, nearly 20 Kms of main steel pipeline has been laid, supported by an extensive 260-kilometre medium-pressure distribution network that ensures seamless connectivity to industrial units.

The company has also streamlined its supply mechanism, aiming to provide gas connections within just 15 days of application for units located within the pipeline grid.

The shift from LPG to PNG is proving to be both economically and operationally advantageous. Industry experts note that the transition requires only minor modifications in existing burner systems, making adoption relatively simple and cost-effective.

Already, 16 major industrial units in Adityapur have commenced operations using PNG, while agreements with eight more units have been finalised, signalling strong momentum.
Leading industrial players from nearby Jamshedpur have set the tone for this transition.
Facilities operated by Tata Steel have successfully run on PNG for months, while Tata Motors has initiated similar conversion processes at its plant.

Their adoption has reinforced confidence among MSMEs, many of whom are now actively exploring the switch.

In a parallel push to improve accessibility, GAIL has introduced a dedicated digital platform that enables industrial and commercial consumers to apply for connections online and track their status in real time.

The benefits of PNG are also extending beyond factories, with several restaurants in Adityapur embracing the cleaner fuel alternative.
As energy dynamics continue to evolve globally, Adityapur’s proactive shift to PNG stands out as a model of resilience and forward-thinking industrial transformation.
