New Delhi/Jamshedpur, Dec 7: Senior journalist and social activist Anni Amrita represented Jamshedpur and Jharkhand at the prestigious UN Women ‘She Leads 3’ leadership workshop, held in New Delhi on 4–5 December. The two-day programme, hosted at The Lalit Hotel, brought together about 30 emerging women leaders, sarpanchs and social activists from across India, selected from over 700 applicants.
The workshop concluded with a collective message emphasising that political participation and continuous effort are essential for ensuring women’s rightful place in leadership. Organisers reiterated UN Women’s commitment to supporting women aspiring to enter public life.
Amrita, who has more than 22 years of experience in journalism and contested the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections from Jamshedpur West as an independent candidate, shared her journey during the session. She presented key social and economic issues of the Jamshedpur West constituency, which were later used by political strategists as a case study for explaining campaign planning and voter engagement.
Election strategists Alimpag Banerjee and Hamraj Singh trained participants on modern campaigning, including door-to-door outreach, digital engagement, understanding voter behaviour and crafting issue-based narratives.
Several Members of Parliament, including Mahua Moitra, Renuka Chowdhury and Sri Bharat, addressed the participants. Chowdhury, reflecting on four decades in public life, said, “A woman entering politics still faces challenges, but she must carve her own path with determination.” Moitra encouraged women to focus on substance over appearance, saying, “It is talent and intention that connect with people, not attire.”
Participants from Rajasthan, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and other states shared personal experiences of overcoming social and structural barriers.
The organising team—Kavya, Shubhra and Nidhi Punedha—led the event under the UN Women She Leads initiative, which aims to strengthen the leadership capacity of women in public life.
With the Women’s Reservation Act set to reshape political representation, the workshop is seen as a significant step in preparing grassroots and emerging leaders like Anni Amrita for larger roles in governance and public service.
