Jamshedpur youth’s body found floating in Dimna Lake, police suspect suicide

Jamshedpur: The body of a 22-year-old youth, Mohammed Afroz, was discovered floating in Dimna Lake, under the Bodam thana area, approximately 12 km from Jamshedpur, on Wednesday morning.

Afroz, a resident of Taj Nagar in Kapali, Seraikela-Kharsawan district, had been missing since March 22. His family had been anxiously searching for him after he failed to return home.

A day after his disappearance, police recovered Afroz’s motorcycle, a T-shirt, and his mobile phone near Dimna Lake. Despite this unsettling discovery, his family initially assumed he was playing a mind game and held onto the hope that he would eventually return home. However, their hopes were shattered when Afroz’s lifeless body surfaced in the lake this morning.

Authorities recovered the body and sent it to MGM Medical College (MGMMCH) mortuary for an autopsy to determine whether his death was a suicide, accident, or foul play.

According to Bodam Thana OC, Manoranjan Kumar, preliminary investigations suggest suicide. “After speaking with the bereaved family, we came to the conclusion that the youth took his own life,” he said. Afroz was the only son of his parents and worked as an AC mechanic.

Investigations revealed that Afroz had aspirations of working in the Gulf and had already secured the necessary documents for his travel. He had also saved money for the journey. However, his father, facing financial difficulties, wanted access to these savings. This led to a serious argument between the father and son on March 22, just before Afroz left home and went missing.

The tragic news of Afroz’s death sent shockwaves through Taj Nagar, plunging the community into grief and mourning. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death while awaiting the final autopsy report for further confirmation.
