Relief for JWU Students: NCTE Validates B.Ed and M.Ed Degrees with Retrospective Approval from 2021

Jamshedpur: In a breakthrough for hundreds of aspiring teachers, Jamshedpur Women’s University (JWU) has finally secured official technical recognition for its B.Ed, M.Ed, and B.P.Ed courses from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Crucially, the recognition has been granted from the 2021-22 academic session onwards, effectively validating the degrees of past graduates that were previously under a cloud of uncertainty.

The crisis began when Jamshedpur Women’s College was upgraded to a university. While the institution previously held NCTE approval under its “Women’s College” name, the university administration continued admissions and classes from the 2021-22 session under the “university” banner without completing the mandatory name-transfer process with the NCTE.

The Impact on Graduates

This administrative oversight had severe consequences for students who passed out during the 2021-22 session. As they entered the job market, many faced rejection or mental distress during document verification, as the University’s recognition did not technically exist in official records at the time of their enrolment. Their degrees were essentially considered “invalid” for government appointments until this week.

The Resolution

Following a series of high-level meetings between the JWU administration and the NCTE’s Eastern Regional Committee (ERC) in Delhi, a decisive resolution was reached. During the 387th ERC-NCTE meeting held on January 16, 2026, it was formally clarified that the recognition would be effective retrospectively from the 2021-22 session.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Anjila Gupta, along with Controller of Examinations Dr. Rama Subramaniam and the Department of Education team, spearheaded the efforts to clear the confusion that had persisted since a preliminary meeting in October 2024. While the university views this as a major achievement, the five-year delay has raised questions regarding the risks taken by the administration during the transition phase.

For the students, however, the news brings an end to years of anxiety, fully validating their professional qualifications for future employment.
