‘Jamshedpur Will Be at the Heart of Tata Group’s Growth’

Jamshedpur: Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran delivered a historic address on Monday, signaling a bold new era of unprecedented workforce growth, major technology investment, and a deepening partnership with the Jamshedpur community. Speaking to the media after paying tribute to founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata on his 187th Founders’ Day at the Tata Steel works, Chandrasekaran declared that “Jamshedpur will continue to be at the heart of Tata Group’s growth and history”.

A Historic Milestone for India’s Workforce

In perhaps the most stunning announcement of the day, Chandrasekaran detailed the breakneck speed of the Tata Group’s recent global workforce expansion and set an even more ambitious target for the near future.

Just five years ago, the Group’s employee base stood at around 7.5 lakh. Today, it has surged past 11 lakh, driven largely by aggressive expansion in manufacturing and other key sectors.

Looking ahead, Chandrasekaran revealed that this trajectory is set to accelerate. Based on current expansion plans, the Tata Group expects its global workforce to reach 15 lakh employees within the next five to seven years.

₹11,000 Crore Investment: Deepening Roots in Jharkhand

The commitment to Jamshedpur and the surrounding state was further solidified by the announcement of a massive new financial commitment. Following what was described as a very productive meeting with the Jharkhand Chief Minister a day earlier, Chandrasekaran revealed that the Group has announced an investment of ₹11,000 crore in the state.

Key Focus: Sustainability and Green Tech

A major portion of this investment will be directed towards developing new processes to reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing. Sustainability and green technology are now central to the company’s expansion strategy, which will see the implementation of innovative eco-friendly processes, including a new method recently developed by Tata Steel in the Netherlands.

Tata Steel at 120

Chandrasekaran emphasized the Group’s deep emotional and economic bond with Jamshedpur, calling it a “very special place”. Tata Steel, which will complete 120 years of operations this May, continues to thrive by pushing forward with new technologies and expanding its flat, long, and downstream product lines, not only in Jamshedpur but across all of India.

The Future of Mobility and Energy

Beyond steel, the Chairman detailed how other Tata companies are investing heavily in next-generation technologies within Jamshedpur, creating a robust local innovation ecosystem:

  • Tata Motors is investing in building groundbreaking next-generation technology using hydrogen.
  • Tata AutoComp Systems has opened a brand new manufacturing facility in the city.
  • Tata Power is significantly expanding its renewable energy presence, in strategic partnership with both Tata Steel and Tata Motors.

“So many things are happening,” Chandrasekaran said. “We are looking at how we can continue to be part of this ecosystem and grow along with the community of Jamshedpur”.

Managing Global Instability: Safety and Resilience

Addressing questions about global instability, Chandrasekaran offered a measured view of the geopolitical landscape, which he described as “the most unpredictable situation”.

While acknowledging that the global situation requires planning for various risks, he stated that the Tata Group is confident it can manage these challenges and does not expect major disruptions to its supply chain.

For instance, despite tensions in the Middle East and Iran, Chandrasekaran confirmed that Tata Steel has sufficient inventory of limestone (sourced from that region) and is actively diversifying alternative sources, ensuring that operations will not face major problems.

Employee Safety is “First Priority”

The Chairman underlined that the safety of the Group’s employees across the globe—working in airlines like Air India, service companies, and hotels—remains the absolute top priority. He stated that the Group has been fully active over the last few days to ensure employee safety and support their families where required.

In times of crisis, the Group focuses on two major areas: safety and business continuity. Chandrasekaran emphasized that even if a few days or months of business are affected, that can be recovered, “but safety comes first”.

AI Creates Opportunity, Not Job Losses for TCS

In a critical statement regarding the impact of technological changes and Artificial Intelligence on the labor market, Chandrasekaran dismissed fears of massive job losses. He stated that technological shift often makes people anxious, but these new tools will ultimately be used to integrate and enhance operations for companies across all industries.

“Because of all this, there is no problem in TCS business,” he said.

Far from reducing employment, AI and digital transformation will create more opportunities for TCS, as it helps other major firms take full advantage of these technologies. Chandrasekaran confirmed that the company is investing heavily in skill development and equipping employees with new capabilities to handle these emerging technological shifts.

A Vision for Workforce Diversity and Skill Building

Finally, the Chairman underlined the need for a more diverse and skilled workforce to drive the Group’s future growth.

While Tata Steel currently has approximately 18% women employees, the goal is to significantly improve gender diversity. Beyond gender, the Group is looking to recruit more young people and a greater variety of educational backgrounds, moving beyond a sole reliance on engineers to build talent from all disciplines.

Regardless of where employees work in the future, Chandrasekaran stressed that the Group will “invest a lot in skill development”. As the Tata Group marked the birth anniversary of its founder in the city he created, the message from Chairman Chandrasekaran was a clear, future-focused vision rooted in a powerful legacy—a vision of a resilient, inclusive, and technologically advanced future.
