Jamshedpur, Nov 14: The Jamshedpur West Assembly seat recorded a voter turnout of 56.53% in the 2024 elections, marking an increase from 53.89% in 2019. The contest here is a high-stakes battle between Congress’ Banna Gupta and JDU’s Saryu Roy, with the seat’s history and the significant Muslim voter base making it a focal point of political attention.
Jamshedpur West, which has around 3.85 lakh voters, also has a Muslim population of about 1.35 lakh voters. The strong turnout in Muslim-majority areas this year indicates heightened political engagement within this community, which could be crucial in determining the election’s outcome. Historically, the seat has seen varying voter participation, with 2014 recording a high of 59.65% turnout, driven by increased political awareness. However, the voting percentage dropped to 53.89% in 2019, which could be attributed to the political atmosphere at the time. The rise to 56.53% in 2024 signals a renewed political pulse in the area.
The election day was not without incidents, as clashes broke out between supporters of Congress’s Banna Gupta and AIMIM’s Babar Khan in Azadnagar. Stone pelting and altercations were reported but were swiftly controlled by the police, ensuring that the voting process continued smoothly. Despite these brief disruptions, long queues were observed throughout the day at multiple polling stations, such as Gandhi Maidan and Jawaharnagar Road, where voters showed up in large numbers from early morning.
The increase in voter turnout can be attributed to the growing political activism in the region, as people, especially from Muslim areas, are more determined to participate in shaping their political future. The race between Gupta and Roy has captured the public’s attention, with the election outcome expected to hinge largely on the voting patterns within the Muslim community, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the result.
Overall, it can be said that While minor disputes occurred, the 168 booths in Mango area maintained peaceful voting, with voting concluding smoothly across all but two booths. The high turnout in Jamshedpur West underscores the enthusiasm and commitment of voters in the region to make their voices heard.
