Jamshedpur: Persistent rainfall across East Singhbhum has triggered a sharp rise in vegetable prices, hitting local kitchens hard. Over the past week, prices for green vegetables in city markets have climbed by ₹5 to ₹10 per kg, disrupting household budgets.
Production Drops, Logistics Costs Rise
According to local traders, continuous downpours have flooded fields, damaging standing crops and significantly reducing local yields. With local supply dwindling, markets now rely on shipments from outside the region. This dependency has increased transportation costs, further inflating retail prices.
Public Concern and the “Tomato Relief”
While most residents expressed frustration over the rising cost of daily essentials, there is one outlier: tomatoes. Bucking the trend, tomatoes remain highly affordable, currently retailing at just ₹3 to ₹5 per kg.
Weather Outlook: Clear Skies Expected
The region—including Chakulia, Ghatshila, Baharagora, Patamda, and Bodam—experienced heavy rain on Thursday morning. Jamshedpur recorded 15 mm of rainfall in a single day, causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas.
The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for potential storms and rain tonight. However, the forecast indicates that the weather will begin to clear starting April 10, leading to rising temperatures and a likely stabilization of the vegetable supply chain.
