Jamshedpur,Feb 12: With Valentine’s Day round the corner, Jamshedpur traffic police have tightened up vigil on errant bikers by slapping on-the-spot fines, depending on the nature of violations at different strategic locations across the city. The drive was carried out keeping in view Valentine’s Day.
The drive was simultaneously carried out at six strategic locations — Jubilee Park, Mango chowk, near Jugsalai police station, near Tata Pigments gate on Bistupur-Station Road and at Golmuri roundabout.
Those individuals not wearing helmets and triple riders were fined, others without driving licence got a rap. The drive of helmet checking was so vigorous and intensified that the two-wheelers riders were taken aback as many of them had to cope with more than one checking post while moving from one point of the city to another.
A police official said that a spot fine was charged from around 200 individuals for violation of traffic norms. Sources in the traffic department said that the drive was carried out following a directive of senior superintendent of police M Tamil Vanan to keep those with a penchant for rash driving on a tight leash. A source said that about Rs 50,000 was collected through spot fine today.
“The rising cases of road mishaps are a matter of great concern and steps are being taken to curb the menace. We will also see to it that rash-driving is checked with immediate effect, and for this we will look into exactly how many cases related to the road accidents have been registered and if the drivers who are accused of causing the mishap are being convicted,” said an official.
According to the official, the drive would continue in the coming days. He added that the move would bring about a visible change in youngsters, who would learn to develop safe riding habits to avoid paying a cash penalty.
