Jamshedpur: Tata Steel UISL has partnered with the Jamshedpur Hotel and Restaurant Association (JHRA) to implement a Bio Gas Waste Management system in key establishments across the city. Among the first to adopt this innovative system are Akino Luxury Hotel, the renowned South Indian restaurant Dasaprakash, Kerala Samajam School, and prominent MSME companies like Gajanan Ferro and Premium Plastic.
The Bio Gas Waste Management system is set to be inaugurated on August 20, 2024, by Ritu Raj Sinha, Managing Director of Tata Steel UISL, at Kerala Samajam School, Dasaprakash, and Akino Hotel. This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable waste management in Jamshedpur.
Ravish Ranjan, President of JHRA, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the substantial environmental benefits it could bring to the region. He described the introduction of the Bio Gas Waste Management system as a revolutionary move toward sustainable waste disposal in the hospitality sector. The system is expected to reduce the consumption of LPG cylinders by at least three per month, providing cost savings and promoting environmental conservation.
Under the leadership of Ritu Raj Sinha, Tata Steel UISL aims to expand the Bio Gas Waste Management system to all establishments in and around Jamshedpur. A notable advantage of this system is that its byproduct can be used as valuable manure, supporting a circular economy.
Ranjan pointed out that hotels and restaurants in Jamshedpur generate significant amounts of urban waste daily, with organic waste comprising 40% of the total. Unfortunately, much of this waste ends up in landfills, where its potential value is often overlooked. The Bio Gas Waste Management system offers a practical solution to harness the energy potential of organic waste.
“Waste disposal is a major challenge India is facing today, especially with rapid urbanization, a growing population, and under-planned cities,” Ranjan remarked. “Landfills in most cities are already overflowing, with limited space to accommodate increasing volumes of urban waste. Tata Steel UISL’s initiative is a pragmatic approach to building a sustainable future.”
The partnership between JHRA and Tata Steel UISL aligns with the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat initiative, emphasizing the hospitality industry’s role in converting waste into resources. By pioneering sustainable waste management practices, the industry could make a substantial contribution to reducing India’s $180 billion fossil fuel imports.
