Jamshedpur also declared Jharkhand’s First Garbage Free City (GFC) with a 5-Star rating from 3-Star earlier. The city has also been declared Jharkhand’s First Water+ City
Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur has brought laurels to Jharkhand by securing the third position at the national level in the category of cities with a population between 3 to 10 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. The recognition was conferred by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, during a prestigious award ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
This year’s Swachh Survekshan, the ninth edition of India’s largest cleanliness survey, was conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). It saw participation from over 4,500 cities, covering 1.1 crore households, and engaged more than 14 crore citizens through feedback and digital platforms. The cities were evaluated on 10 key parameters and 54 indicators including door-to-door waste collection, source segregation, public sanitation facilities, citizen feedback, and innovation in waste management.

Jamshedpur’s team comprising Principal Secretary of Urban Development & Housing Department Sunil Kumar, State Urban Development Agency (SUDA) Director Suraj Kumar, and Deputy Municipal Commissioner of JNAC Krishna Kumar received the award from the President on behalf of the city.
The city not only achieved the third rank nationally in its category but also earned a prestigious 5-star garbage-free rating, signifying high performance in sustainable solid waste management and sanitation.
D B Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, said, “I extend my congratulations to all Jamshedpur residents on this occasion. The award is a testament to our consistent efforts and our collective sense of civic responsibility. I am confident that we will continue to uphold the Steel City’s status in the future.”
Notably, Jamshedpur scored an impressive 11,588 out of 12,500 marks. The jump to the 3rd rank from 43rd earlier is a significant achievement. This recognition is a tribute to the dedication of every citizen and stakeholder who contributed to this mission.
This year, Swachh Survekshan was themed “RRR – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, with a focus on source segregation and community participation. Jamshedpur’s remarkable performance is the result of collective action under this theme, where citizens adopted sustainable waste practices, such as home composting using wet waste, creative reuse through the Waste to Wonder initiative, participation in Zero Waste Societies, door-to-door source segregated collection, responsible disposal through Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), e-waste centres, etc.
Jamshedpur has also been declared Jharkhand’s First Garbage Free City (GFC) with a 5-Star rating from 3-Star earlier. The city has also been declared Jharkhand’s First Water+ City, with treated wastewater now being used in parks, nature trails, and water bodies.
The award is a result of consistent efforts in: 100% door-to-door waste collection across all wards, Segregation at source, with separate bins for dry and wet waste, Deployment of composting and material recovery facilities, Installation and maintenance of public toilets under Toilet 2.0 campaign and Active engagement through school competitions, hotel/market cleanliness rankings, and wall painting drives under the theme “Recycle, Reuse, Reduce.
Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and SUDA, with support from Tata Steel UISL, have been instrumental in ensuring effective waste collection, public sanitation, and citizen-driven cleanliness campaigns.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi said,“This honour is a moment of pride for the entire district. It is the outcome of the dedicated efforts of our sanitation workers, the discipline of city residents, and the relentless work of our urban bodies. We must continue this collective spirit to make cleanliness a part of our daily culture.”
The Swachh Survekshan Awards were conferred as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban 2.0, launched under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, aiming to make Indian cities “Garbage Free” by 2026. Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal and MoS Tokhan Sahu were also present during the ceremony.
This year’s top three cleanest cities in the country (overall) are: Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai
In the 3–10 lakh category, Jamshedpur stands alongside other top performers such as Rajkot and Mysore.
