Tata Steel Raises Power Tariff in Jamshedpur; Domestic Consumers Impacted

Jamshedpur: Domestic consumers of Tata Steel in Jamshedpur will face the brunt of a recent electricity price hike. Under the new tariff, consumers must pay an additional 20 to 50 paise per unit. This order, issued by the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission (JSERC), will take effect on April 1, 2026.

According to the new slabs, consumers using up to 100 units will see energy charges rise from ₹3.10 to ₹3.30 per unit, while their fixed charges will increase by ₹6, rising from ₹34 to ₹40. Those consuming more than 100 units will now pay ₹5.50 per unit (up from ₹5.30) and a fixed charge of ₹75 (up from ₹70).

Domestic users with High Tension (HT) lines face the steepest hike; their energy charges jump from ₹5.25 to ₹5.75 per unit, with fixed charges rising from ₹95 to ₹110. Commercial service consumers will now pay ₹6.50 per unit (up from ₹6.00) and a fixed charge of ₹150 (up from ₹130).

Industrial and Agricultural Impact

Industrial consumers received some relief. While Low Tension (LT) industrial fixed charges remain unchanged at ₹150, their energy charges will rise to ₹6.00 per unit. High Tension industrial services will see fixed charges rise to ₹450 and energy charges to ₹6.50 per unit. Notably, the Commission provided total relief to the agricultural and irrigation sectors by leaving their tariffs unchanged.

Other Services

• Street Lights: Fixed charges rise to ₹150; energy charges rise to ₹6.80 per unit.

• Railway & Military: Fixed charges rise to ₹450; energy charges rise to ₹6.60 per unit.

While Tata Steel management had initially proposed a 12% increase in current rates, the Commission approved a lower hike of 4.74%.
