Jamshedpur, April 20: Jharkhand reeled under intense heat on Monday, with Daltonganj emerging as the hottest location in the state at a scorching 43.8°C, while Jamshedpur also recorded a searing 42.6°C, underlining the severity of the ongoing heatwave conditions.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Ranchi, temperatures across several districts remained significantly above normal. Ranchi recorded a maximum of 40.1°C, while Bokaro and other parts of the state also witnessed soaring mercury levels. The persistent rise in temperature has contributed to uncomfortable and sweltering conditions throughout the day.
However, in a dramatic shift in weather, thundershowers accompanied by lightning were witnessed at several places across the Kolhan region, including Jamshedpur, during the later part of the day. The sudden spell of rain and gusty winds brought much-needed relief to residents who had been grappling with oppressive heat for days.
The brief but intense weather activity helped cool down temperatures and eased the discomfort caused by the extreme conditions. Streets that were earlier deserted due to the heat saw renewed activity as the rain brought respite.
“By afternoon, it had become unbearable to step outside. The sudden rain in the evening felt like a blessing,” said a resident of Jamshedpur.
Another local shared, “The thunder and lightning were quite intense, but the drop in temperature afterward made the atmosphere much more pleasant.”
Weather officials have indicated that such localized thunderstorm activity may continue in parts of the state, offering intermittent relief from the prevailing heatwave. However, residents have been advised to remain cautious during lightning events and stay hydrated amid fluctuating weather conditions.
