Jamshedpur, July 27 : Following after 24 hours of the shootout at Sonari by a police sub-inspector Manoj Gupta, the police are still hunting for the assailant. Estranged relationship between a couple led the husband Manoj Gupta to shoot his wife Punam Gupta, wife’s alleged lover Chandan Kumar and Chandan’s mother at an residential apartment in Kagalnagar under Sonari thana area on Friday morning. Chandan’s mother who was about 65 died on the spot where as Punam (40) and Chandan (42) who sustained bullet injuries in the abdomen and legs have been admitted at the Tata Main Hospital.
SSP Anoop Birtharay said that a police team conducted raid at Chapra, the home town of the accused. Gupta�s home town is at Bihar and police suspect that he might have hidden there. �The dispute between husband and wife has been there from past one decade. The police department even tired to solve the dispute but the situation remains like this,� said SSP.
The police suspect the incident is the result of extra marital affair. The incident took place in front of the assailant’s two daughters who are eyewitnesses of the case. The police team is digging details from them. Manoj’s son who is a student of DAV Public School in Bistupur was taken into safe custody from the school as they apprehended that the assailant may inflict injury to his son also in a fit of anger.
The police are trying to trace the assailant sub-inspector who has abscond soon after launched a gun-shot attack on his wife, Chandan and Chandan’s mother.
According to police, the relationship between Manoj and Punam turned estranged due to an alleged affair of Punam with Chandan whom she would call brother.
Sources said as the relation between the couple deteriorated Punam started living at Chandan’s house at Patna since the past two months, leaving her a 17-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son with Manoj. The couple’s elder daughter studies at a college in Delhi.
According to sources, Punam, Chandan and Chandan’s mother had come to Manoj’s residential flat at about 9 am today from Patna to settle the matter.
” As per the information we gathered after Punam came along with her so-called brother at the Naulakha apartment, argments between them started. The sub-inspector bolted the door from inside and started shooting at his wife, Chandan and also to the elderly lady,” said a police official. Manoj fired in all six rounds from his service revolver which he had kept in the almirah.
As the news spread, the neighbours rushed to the spot and rushed all the injured to Tata Main Hospital. The doctors on the emergency duty declared the elderly lady as brought dead.
A police party led by the OC, Sonari police station, Niraj Prasad Sinha to rushed to the spot. Soon afterward, senior SP, Anoop Birtharay and superintendent of police (City) Subhash Chandra Jat had also rushed to the spot.
“From the preliminary investigation, we came to know that Manoj Gupta who is a suspended sub-inspector wanted to kill his wife Punam, but out of rage he had also shot at a 42-year-old man, Chandan Kumar who is her so-called brother and Chandan’s mother,” said the senior SP.
He said the elderly lady whose name is yet to be established was killed on the spot, where as Punam and Chandan are shot at and injured.
