Corona today accounts for 6 Jamshedpur lives, death toll jumps to 13

Jamshedpur, July 20: The deadly virus corona is spreading its wings in the city. Six more deaths took place at Tata Main Hospital ( TMH) on Monday. Till now, the city has witnessed 13 deaths while TMH alone has witnessed 16 deaths.

Those who died of Covid on Monday include three women and all from different localities of the city.  An 83-year-old woman from Kadma who had been admitted at the Tata Main Hospital’s Covid ward on Sunday, died this morning. An 80-year-old man from Baridih locality who was admitted at the hospital on Saturday died this morning.  Two more women who were of 60 years and 51 years from Mango and Sonari, admitted on Saturday and Wednesday respectively succumbed to the Covid at the Tata Main Hospital this morning.

With the four fresh deaths taking place on Monday, the total number of Covid deaths in East Singhbhum district rose to 11 and at the Tata Main Hospital to 14 as three Covid patients who were from outside the district were undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Meanwhile, concerned over the situation, the administration has sealed the offices of the two civic bodies on Monday after sending most of the staff of these offices to home quarantine.  Positive cases were found in Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) office as well as Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC) on Sunday night. 

With the civic bodies’ staff quarantined, the work of body disposal which is carried out by the JNAC has become a tough task. With Monsoon rain in full bloom, threat of water-borne diseases is also looming large. 

” It is becoming challenging for us. As our field workers are getting the bodies disposed of under the supervision of City Manager, Ravi Bharti at the Subarnarekha crematorium.  Though Bharti is also an office staff, he has been kept off from the quarantine as he is apparently healthy as of now,” said an official of JNAC.

The Kolhan Division which was under green zone, came under coronavirus map with two persons testing positive at Chakulia, under East Singhbhum district on May 12. Several other persons tested positive have travel history from Maharashtra, Delhi, Gurugram and Chennai.

The city witnessed its first COVID death when a 71-year-old man who was a resident of Sonari died at the Tata Main Hospital on July 4.   About an hour later an 88-year-old woman who was admitted at the Tata Main Hospital died of pneumonia at the hospital.  The hospital authority sent the swab sample of the deceased for examination to the MGM Medical College, where the test report came out Covid-19 positive at about 11 pm.

The total deaths recorded in TMH stands at 14 which includes 11 from Jamshedpur, 2 from West Singhbhum district and 1 person of Jamadoba in Dhanbad succumbed to the virus.

Five deaths were reported in Jharkhand on Monday, taking the Covid-19 toll to 54. While four deaths — three women and one man — were reported in Jamshedpur, a 50-year-old woman died in the Garwah district.

In Jamshedpur, 11 deaths have been reported till now. Of the 54 Covid-19 victims, 23 belonged to the 61-80 age group, and 14 to 50-60 age group.

In last 24 hours, more than 210 people tested coronavirus positive, taking the tally over 5,600. As per the Health Department data, there are 2,815 active cases.

Ranchi, Hazaribagh are emerging as Covid-19 hot spots. In state capital Ranchi alone, 50-90 cases are being reported everyday.

As the Covid dedicated hospital beds are full, the district administration is gearing to set up more dedicated hospitals.

The samples are being tested at government facilities, including MGM Jamshedpur, RIMS Ranchi, PMCH Dhanbad and Itki Arogyashala Ranchi, as well as different private labs.

Jharkhand had reported first coronavirus case on March 31 as a Malaysian woman had tested Covid-19 positive. It took 67 days to reach the 1,000 mark.

But the infection’s rate of spread has accelerated with the number of cases crossing the 5,000-mark. Of this, 50 per cent was recorded in July itself.

The recovery rate in the state has fallen to 48.95 per cent. Of the 2,30,429 samples collected, 2,15,661 have been tested.

There are 5,595 people under under surveillance and asymptomatic. 4,306 people have completed 28 days of compulsory observation. There are 7,869 people at quarantine facilities and 2,72,932 in home isolation.
