Jamshedpur sees first major monsoon spell

Jamshedpur, July 10: After weeks of subdued monsoon activity, steady rain lashed Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas on Friday afternoon, continuing well into the evening and bringing much-needed relief from humid conditions.
The prolonged spell, however, led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, affecting traffic movement across parts of the city. The downpour also disrupted electricity supply in several areas under the JBVNL command due to weather-related faults.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi, has forecast a further increase in monsoon activity over the next few days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) are likely at isolated places across Jharkhand on July 11, 12 and 14.
More significantly, heavy rainfall is likely on July 13 over the south-eastern districts of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan, besides parts of north-eastern and central Jharkhand. No significant weather warning has been issued for July 15.
Despite Friday’s widespread rain, Jharkhand continues to face a substantial monsoon deficit. According to IMD data, the state received 172.4 mm rainfall against the normal 274.9 mm between June 1 and July 9, registering an overall 37% shortfall.
East Singhbhum has recorded 168.9 mm rainfall against the normal 320.2 mm, reflecting a 47% deficit. Seraikela-Kharsawan has received 213.8 mm against the normal 281.5 mm, a 24% shortfall, while West Singhbhum has recorded a 23% rainfall deficit.
Among the worst-affected districts are Chatra (-78%), Garhwa (-76%), Godda (-66%), Pakur (-63%) and Koderma (-60%).
The IMD has advised residents, especially in districts likely to receive heavy rain on July 13, to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid venturing into vulnerable areas during intense weather activity.
