Jamshedpur, Sept 9: Steel City which was standing on the verge of becoming the suicide capital of India has seen a decrease in the number of suicides since 2010 specially among students.
The only registered suicide prevention centre of the city �Jeevan� has been working with the city schools to release stress among the students.
In 2013 city witnessed 216 suicides in Jamshedpur and nearby Adityapur (Seraikela-Kharsawan district) while the number of came down to 211 in the year 2014, though reduction of only 5 and decrease rate is low but there is a change talking place, said Dr. Dr Jeoraj Jain, Director of Jeevan adding that till August 2015 the number of suicide is 145 and we hope this year its below 200.
Our thrust area has been schools and lot of awareness has grown among students in Jamshedpur. Talking about the student suicide, Dr. Jain further informed, �21.4 % student committed suicide among the total in Jamshedpur in 2010 but the percentage is coming down with every passing year, in 2011 it was 19% and it came down drastically to 15.4 % in 2012.
Again it rose to 18.5 % in 2013 but there was decrease in 2014 were only 14.2 % students committed suicide. We are hoping that 2015 becomes a landmark year as only 6.2 % student suicide is recorded till August 2015�, added Dr. Jain.
Founder Member of Jeevan, Dr. Ram said, we have tied up with 65 schools of the city and have provided them with a circular for organizing activities to relieve stress among students all round the year and the best school will be awarded with JEEVAN Trophy.
Dr. Ram further informed that last year KSMS School won the trophy while MNPS was adjudged the runners-up. The 2015 winner will be decided on Thursday, September 10 during World Suicide Prevention day.
Jeevan, a Suicide Prevention Center is a member of the International Organization, �Befrienders Word Wide, UK�. On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, Jeevan will be orgaisning several programs to mark the day.
Most of the schools will take out student-rallies and stage Nukkad Plays to spread awareness against suicides in the society. Chinmaya Vidyalay South Park will take out the rally this year with 50 students and teachers from Jeevan centre in Bistupur passing through Q Road, Bistupur Main Road and terminating at Narbheram H. High School, Bistupur.
A motivational program will held for students and parents at Michael John Auditorium while the main program at SNTI will be held in the evening were Dr. Amool Ranjan from RINPAS, Ranchi will be the guest speaker while Biren Bhuta, CSR Chief Tata Steel will be the chief guest.
