Jamshedpur, Nov 21: Saryu Roy, MLA of Jamshedpur (East) has filed a defamation case against two persons – Bhupendra Singh, a resident of Sidhgora and Rakesh Singh of Telco. The duo who are said to be supporters of former chief minister and BJP’s vice president, Raghubar Das, in their social posts had raised questions on the honesty of the MLA.

The case was filed on Monday at the civil court by Roy’s lawyer Saurabh Kumar Sinha. According to the information provided to the court by the lawyer the duo had claimed in their Facebook posts that during Roy’s tenure as the state’s food and civil supplies minister between 2014 and 2019 he had resorted to corruption to amass wealth which he had used to build a huge mansion. Sinha told the court that the duo had publicised the allegations through media outlets and websites.

On November 10 Sinha had sent legal notices to Bhupendra and Rakesh and had directed them to tender a public apology within seven days for their attempts to defame Roy or furnish documents to prove their allegations. The advocate had also stated in this legal notice that if they failed to comply within a week then a defamation suit will be filed against them in the concerned court.

On Monday, after filing the defamation suit, Sinha said that acting on behalf of Roy he had sent the legal notice, according to which the duo should have either deleted their objectionable social media posts and tendered an apology or provided evidence to prove their allegations. But, the duo chose to disregard the warning and the one-week period ended on November 18.

Sinha said that the defamation suit has been filed against Bhupendra and Rakesh for levelling baseless allegations against Roy on social media. The lawyer added that this is part of a political conspiracy to defame Roy who is well-known for his anti-corruption campaigns and has a clean track record. Sinha asserted that all proof concerning Roy and the duo that levelled false allegations will be provided to the court.
