Jamshedpur power crisis worsens as TVNL unit breaks down

Jamshedpur, April 14: Power crisis in and around Jamshedpur is all set to worsen with the breakdown of one unit of the Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Limited (TVNL), which supplies electricity to the city, sources said.

According to sources, the breakdown in the TVNL unit has aggravated the already dismal power supply scenario in and around the city. The onset of summer every year results in four fold increase in the demand for electricity as ACs, coolers, fans and other cooling equipments are used round-the-clock throughout the season. This leads to a power crisis due to a huge gap between demand and supply of electricity.

Due to the breakdown at TVNL, the usual power supply also suffers considerably. This further affects the prospects of Jamshedpur citizens getting adequate electricity, sources said.

The power crisis is affecting people mostly in non-company areas where the residents do not have any other alternative to government owned power generator companies. Due to insufficient power supply, loadshedding continues to take place during the summer season. Frequent power cuts have almost become a ritual in this season.

In the city, loadshedding was witnessed in Birsanagar, Manpeetha, Govindpur, Karandih, Azadnagar, Mango, Olidih, Jawaharnagar, Bagbera, Parsudih, Dimna Road and several other localities of the city, sources said.

According to Pratosh Kumar, GM, Jamshedpur Area Board, electricity department, “Measures have begun for improving the power supply in the summer season. Gradually, power supply will become normal. We will resort to alternatives to keep the power supply arrangements in place.”

There are around 4.6 lakh electricity subscribers in Kolhan. With the temperature touching 43 degree Celsius and no relief in sight, the situation is going to be tougher for the citizens in the days to come.
