Jamshedpur postal department gears up for Rakhi, extra counter to come

Jamshedpur, Aug 2: Sending rakhis to other cities is a problem but the General Post Office in Bistupur will make it comfortable. The General Post office in the city will start an additional counter for registry and speed post delivery soon. Generally there are three speed post and registry counters but now sisters wanting to send rakhis to their brothers on Raksha Bandhan on Aug 11 would get a specialised window to serve them better and faster.

An official of the General Post Office, Jamshedpur said that post offices do witness a lot of rush during this time. Therefore, to make things easier, they will introduce another counter.

“These days the transit time from one city is just a day and the material reaches the destination within two or three days. India Post has been offering special services on rakhi from the past some years because this is all about emotion. Earlier, the delivery used to get delayed but now people are satisfied with the fast service,” he said.

The General Post Office in fact has installed 11 boxes for 11 cities where interested people can drop their rakhi to be delivered to the desired destination. This is for those who do not want to send their rakhis via speed post or registry. The cities that the post offices cater to are New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Noida, Patna, Ranchi and Dhanbad. Jamshedpur is the first city to initiate this service in Jharkhand.

“In case somebody does not want to use the registry or the speed post service, they can simply come and drop their envelopes here at the boxes and they will get delivered on time,” he added.

The post office is also selling special rakhi envelopes at a cost of Rs 20 which can be used to send rakhis. The colorful envelopes are plastic coated, waterproof and tear proof that keeps the rakhi safe. he added that the envelopes this year are larger.

“I think this kind of initiative gives respect to emotions and the brother-sister bonding. There are so many brothers and sisters who live apart busy in their own lives. While rakhi ties the bond, the post offices prove to be a catalyst in the process,” said Shikha Arora, a student of Jamshedpur Women’s College.
