Jamshedpur, June 23 : Police initiates a fresh drive to curb criminal activities by launching a drive of arms-checking across the city. The drive will be carried out in the line of helmet-checking, the arms-checking drive will be conducted at strategic points simultaneously.

Senior superintendent of police, Anoop Birthray said that they have started the drive last night on an intelligence output that a criminal gang has hatched a conspiracy to execute a crime in the city.

“We have asked officers-in-charge of Bistupur, Sakchi, Kadma, Mango, Golmuri and Sitaramderathana area to carry out the arms-checking drive in their respective areas. The drive which started at 8.30 pm continued till 10 pm,” said the senior SP.

Birthray said that during a checking post near Jusco Office in Bistupur, they nabbed two bikers, one them carrying a pistol-lighter. He said both the youths are still detained at the Bistupurpolice station for interrogation.

Incidents of conmen diverting the attention of the public and making away with their bags containing cash and valuables have also been on the rise in the city. Despite efforts to curb the incidents by the police the situation remain the same.
Though such incidents are frequently occurring in various parts of the city, the police have not able to control the situation. People coming out of banks after withdrawing money have been the victims in a majority of the cases.

A majority of chain snatching incidents have taken place during late evening hours when it is difficult to identify snatchers. Snatchers grab the victims from the back and snatch their chains, earrings and other ornaments and escape from the scene within seconds. They target women who pass through deserted areas.

There is no denying the fact the district administration has increased police surveillance activity over the weeks with scores of policemen in uniform and plain clothes holding surprise checking of the vehicles and arms at every nook and corner of the city. But, the criminals have managed to accomplish their unlawful agenda despite heavy police bandobast reminiscing the days of early nineties when the then police superintendent Parvez Hayat was charged of poor law and order machinery.

Birthray said they will conduct the arms-checking drive in more effective way and would try to ensure that no one can hoodwink the arms checking-post if carries a fire-arms.

According to a police officer, in the modified form of arms-checking plain-clothed cops will remain ready with bike about 200 metres away from the place where the checking will be carried out.
