Jamshedpur, Oct 1: College students will soon visit door to door to conduct survey for the police. The police administration of Kolhan Division has decided to conduct a survey on what does the common man expect of the police. With the phenomenal expansion of the geographic area to be policed and rising cases of crime, the idea is to take feedback and thus reframe the police strategy.
Students of management students of Netaji Subhas Institute of Business Management (NSIBM) and Arka Jain College will be roped in to conduct the survey. A total of 75 students will be involved in the task.
Kolhan DIG Rajiv Ranjan Singh made this announcement at XLRI auditorium during a meeting with the police team and students of NSIBM and Arka Jain College. Addressing the gathering, he said that as per the orders of DGP, the survey would be conducted at East Singhbhum and Seraikela Kharswan. During the survey students will ask 20 questions from people based on functioning of the police and areas of improvement.
In the first phase, survey will be carried at Mango, Parsudih,Sidhgora and Kadma police stations areas of East Singbhum and under Seraikela Kharswan district survey will be done under Gamharia and Adityapur police stations. The final report of the survey will be sent to DG for further action.
� We are involving students so that survey is fair and we can get the honest opinion of common citizens. The strongest criticism against the police is the fear of people in approaching them. The phenomenal rise in private security agencies accounts for the growing lack of trust in the state olice. This is a matter of concern,� said a police official.
He said that during the drive citizens will also be encouraged to report crime through email or over social media. This practice gives no option for the police but to act without fail and swiftly. The police�s perception of public safety and their own role here is changing, but only slowly. Many of us are impatient over the pace at which it is happening.
�We must realise that the police are a behemoth and will respond faster only if there is constant support by well-organised community leaders,� he further added.
Meanwhile, the city police are witnessing some testing times in the last two months. In the past 10 days alone eight shooting incidents have been reported alone. While the deteriorating law and order situation in the city remains a major concern, the city is also witnessing a rise in suicides.
�The city had been free from crimes, but now the `knife culture’ has taken roots. The attacks at Mango, Kadma and Sonari are glaring examples. The police should act with utmost vigil and nab the accused. The increase in crimes is a matter of concern. Thefts were a common but recent rise of cases of murders is serious. A crime wave has gripped the city in recent months with figures showing a substantial increase in the number of murders, thefts and robberies taking place across the city. Our city has the reputation of being safe but in the last few days crime graphs have witnessed a sudden rise. It is high time that police identify such criminals and action is taken against them,� said a social worker.
