Police Seize 20 Boxes of Banned Cough Syrup in Jugsalai

Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur police struck a major blow against the illegal drug trade on Wednesday. During a successful raid in the Jugsalai area, officers seized a large consignment of banned cough syrup from the Bole Bum transport agency.

Acting on specific intelligence regarding illegal drug movements, a team from the Jugsalai police station raided the transport premises. During the operation, officials recovered approximately 20 boxes of codeine-based cough syrup. This substance, which users frequently misuse as an intoxicant, falls under the strict regulations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Police sources stated that the smugglers hid the consignment under the cover of regular goods, likely for illegal distribution throughout the region. The seizure has fueled suspicions of a well-organized network smuggling and supplying these banned substances.

The police have registered a case and are currently investigating the consignment’s origin and the identities of those involved in its shipment. Investigators are also scrutinizing the transport agency to determine if the owners knowingly participated or if traffickers simply used the agency as an unwitting transit point.

Officials confirmed they are working to uncover links to a larger inter-state drug trafficking syndicate. They expect to conduct further raids and follow-up actions in the coming days as the probe continues.

This operation belongs to a broader drive by East Singhbhum police to curb the illegal drug trade and prevent pharmaceutical misuse among local youth. Authorities warned that they will take strict action against anyone involved in these activities, including transporters who facilitate the movement of banned drugs.

“Further investigation is in progress to identify and apprehend the key individuals behind the consignment,” said a senior police official.
