Jamshedpur , July 14 : City police have distributed body-worn cameras to the personnel in view of ongoing drive against traffic violators.

The body-worn cameras are designed to monitor the interaction between traffic policeman and motorists. The department hoped that it would help prevent officers from using abusing language and as well as motorists arguing unnecessarily with the police.

A senior officer said that each device has a movable camera, high resolution LCD display, video and audio recording facilities, and 32-gb byte memory to store recorded data.

A traffic policeman said it was a good move. Not many understand how certain motorists provoke us and paint the entire department as being corrupt. The body-worn cameras will help bring down such confrontations and should be distributed to all the traffic policemen across the city.

The body camera resembles a wireless communication set. It can be fixed either on the collar flap or the shirt pocket. It weighs a few hundred grams and can record video and audio for up to 10 hours. Footage can be transferred to a computer and sent to the control room.

We are planning to give it to all of them either in a phased manner or at one shot. Discussions are on regarding its procurement, added the officer.

The city police have already procured such cameras and trying it out. We have procured 50 cameras on a trial basis and they have been distributed to seven police stations he informed.
