Jamshedpur: In a significant breakthrough, the police have successfully solved the murder case of 21-year-old Devraj Pillai, who was fatally stabbed during a clash in Bistupur on October 13. Eight suspects, all aged between 18 and 21 and hailing from the same locality, were arrested on Wednesday. The police also seized crucial evidence, including a dagger, two motorcycles, a Scooty, and seven mobile phones belonging to the assailants.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Manjeet Singh Gujral, alias Anmol; Yash Sonkar, alias Chiku; Abhay Kumar Yadav, alias Tuntun; Arush Lal; Pratik Kumar; Amrit Singh, alias Tidda; Anmol Lal; and Joydeep Nayak, alias Jojo. All are residents of Bistupur, where the incident occurred during a festive night of pandal hopping.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishore Kaushal, the altercation erupted between two groups of youths in the early hours of October 13 as they moved between various pandals celebrating the festival. The clash escalated quickly, resulting in Pillai being stabbed multiple times. Witnesses reported that after the attack, Pillai’s friends rushed him to Tata Main Hospital. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the medical team, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“This was a tragic incident that unfolded in our community during what should have been a festive occasion,” stated SSP Kaushal during a press briefing. He further explained that the police initiated an investigation immediately following the incident, which included gathering CCTV footage from the crime scene and interviewing friends who were with Pillai at the time of the attack.
The investigation process was rigorous, with officers meticulously analyzing the collected evidence and engaging in interviews. The police also started gathering intelligence on possible suspects involved in the incident. “Through a concerted effort and collaboration among different teams within the police department, we were able to identify and apprehend the assailants responsible for this heinous act,” added Kaushal.
The swift response by the police has been praised by the community, which has expressed concern over the rising incidents of violence, particularly among youth during festive seasons. The police emphasized their commitment to ensuring safety and order within the city, particularly during events that attract large crowds.
Following their arrest, all eight suspects were presented before a judicial magistrate on Wednesday and were subsequently remanded to jail as the investigation continues. Authorities are currently assessing the possibility of additional charges based on further evidence and testimonies.
Devraj Pillai, a resident of Ulyan in Kadma, was set to join a contract firm registered under Tata Steel on the following Monday. His untimely death has left a void in the community and among his friends, who are mourning the loss of a young man with a promising future.
