Jamshedpur: Padma Shri for Jharkhand’s Ho scholar Dr Janum Singh Soy

Zakir Hussain, Mulayam, Mahalanabis and 3 others get Padma Vibhushan

9 awarded Padma Bhushan, 91 Padma Shri

New Delhi, Jan 25 (IANS): Dr Janum Singh Soy, a tribal scholar of Jharkhand has been selected for Padma Shri Award for preserving and promoting Ho language for the year 2023. He has been working relentlessly for the last four decades and has authored six books on culture and lifestyle of the Ho tribe. He has helped make Ho as a language for studies in universities and his work is a part of PG curriculum. He has retired from Kolhan University after an illustrious career. 

Ahead of the 74th Republic Day, the President has approved conferment of 106 Padma Awards including 3 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one). The list comprises 6 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 91 Padma Shri Awards. Out of these awardees, 19 are women and the list also includes 2 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 7 Posthumous awardees.

RRR music composer MM Keeravani and Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon will be conferred with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, whereas Zakir Hussain will be awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award.

Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. These Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year.
