Jamshedpur on weather watch as IMD forecasts thunderstorms, gusty winds in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory for Jharkhand, warning of likely thunderstorm activity, lightning, and gusty winds in several parts of the state. According to the forecast, thunderstorms are expected to occur at isolated locations, barring the north-western districts which are likely to remain largely unaffected.

The IMD has cautioned that gusty winds with speeds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph may accompany the thunderstorms, potentially posing risks to life, infrastructure, and outdoor activities. Residents in the affected regions are urged to take necessary precautions such as staying indoors during lightning, securing loose items, and avoiding shelter under trees or open fields during intense weather activity.

Meteorological experts attribute the sudden change in weather to the formation of two prominent trough systems and associated cyclonic circulations spread across parts of eastern, central, and southern India.

The first of these, a north-south trough, has developed from a cyclonic circulation located over northern Gangetic West Bengal and stretches down to north coastal Andhra Pradesh, traversing through coastal Odisha. This system exists at an altitude of approximately 0.9 kilometers above mean sea level and is facilitating moisture incursion into the region.

Simultaneously, a second trough is active from a cyclonic system situated over south-central Uttar Pradesh, extending all the way to southern Tamil Nadu, and passing through Madhya Pradesh, northern Marathwada, and Interior Karnataka. This trough also lies at around 0.9 kilometers above mean sea level, and in combination with the first, is intensifying atmospheric instability over central and eastern India.

The convergence of these weather systems is creating ideal conditions for localized thunderstorm development, especially in areas with heightened moisture levels and daytime heating.

Interestingly, the north-western region of Jharkhand is likely to remain outside the influence of these systems. The IMD does not anticipate any significant thunderstorm activity in districts such as Garhwa, Palamu, and Chatra, where conditions are expected to stay relatively dry and stable.

The IMD is continuously monitoring the evolving situation and will issue updated forecasts and warnings as necessary. Citizens are encouraged to keep track of weather bulletins via official channels and mobile applications for real-time updates.

As Jharkhand transitions through the pre-monsoon season, such weather patterns are not uncommon. However, heightened awareness and preparedness remain key to minimizing risks and ensuring safety for all residents across the state.
