Chaibasa, August 17:  While the nation was celebrating 75th Independence Day on Sunday an act of mob justice brought shame to individual freedom and humanity in a tribal dominated village in West Singhbhum.

A section of villagers punished a newly married couple, allegedly for  improper relationship not in line with tribal rituals, by parading them in a semi-naked condition in the village. The young man was kicked and beaten with stick which led him to sustain serious injuries.

The incident is of Baihatu village under Kumardungi police station area of West Singhbhum district. Jamadar Kondakel, 38, had married his nephew’s wife a year ago. Both had run away from the village after marriage. Jamadar Kondakel had come to the village with his wife a week ago. As soon as the information was received, the angry villagers decided to punish the Jamadar on August 15. After that a meeting was called at Dhipasai near Jamadar’s house.

The marriage of Jamadar and his newly married wife was rejected in the meeting. The Gram Sabha declared the relationship as illegal. After this, the gathering thrashed both of them, accusing  Jamadar of taking away the nephew’s wife by trapping her in a love trap.

They also decided to hang both of them by tying a drum  and paraded them in a semi-naked condition to the village’s Munda’s house. Video footage of the beating was also circulated and seeing it some informed the Kumardungi thana.

While the couple were being beaten up at Munda’s house, the police reached there. The injured Jamadar Kondakel was rescued from the villagers and taken to the Community Health Center Kumardungi. The injured have been sent to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital where the condition of the Jamadar remains critical.

Police station in-charge Ankita Singh said that due to the critical condition of the injured, he could not give any statement and police are probing the matter.

The villagers have alleged that the Jamadar, despite being married, used to wrongly look at the girls. Despite being the father of three children, Jamadar trapped his nephew’s wife in a love trap.

He was driven away and went to the state. After coming, some people called the marriage wrong and threatened to kill him and his family.

Significantly, a few years ago a couple of the village was also found doing the same offense and at that time Jamadar Kondakel led the villagers in beating the couple and made the man semi-naked.
