Ranchi, December 26: Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Rai has in a press release said that if Dhanbad and Bokaro district administration and Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board do not take legal measures to demolish the overdump of outsourcing mines in Damodar river then he would take the issue to High Court.
Saryu Rai has said that if the authories of Bokaro, Dhanbad and JSPCB do not take steps to demolish the overdump of outsourcing mines in Damodar river and remove the serious problem of air pollution in Jharia, then in January, 2024, he would take the matter to the Jharkhand High Court.
“In the year 2011, the then Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the incidents of pollution of Damodar and other rivers and encroachment of river banks and my intervention petition number-WP(C)/1325/2011 regarding this,” Rai said in a statement.
“ After the legal order of the court on my intervention petition, encroachment of Damodar was removed from many places and the industries polluting Damodar stopped dumping garbage in Damodar, due to which Damodar river has become more than 95 percent free from industrial pollution today,” said Rai.
He claimed that his petition number-WP(C)/1325/2011 is still active, pending before the Jharkhand High Court, which passed an order on December 01, 2023 to list it in the third week of January 2024, But the date has not been decided.
“After consulting my advocate Diwakar Upadhyay, I have decided today that in the first week of January, we will file an intervention petition before the court with new information in this matter, along with evidence regarding the outsourcing of mines in Dhanbad and Bokaro districts. The incidents of encroachment in Damodar due to pollution will be mentioned,” said Rai.
The court will also be requested to take action against those industries which have not completely stopped dumping garbage in Damodar till now.
Rai said that under the “Clean Air Programme”, the Government of India is giving a lot of money to the municipalities, through which the state governments have to implement programs to control air pollution in the municipal areas.
It is surprising that there is no mention of any city or place of Jharkhand in the air pollution map of the country, because at any place there is no ‘online real time’ air pollution measuring plant installed and if it is installed, then state pollution Board is not connected to the servers of the Central Pollution Board. Therefore, it is not known what is the status of air pollution in Jharkhand containing pollution particles of the size PM-10, PM-2.5 and PM-1.
