Jamshedpur MLA Purnima Sahu slams govt over kidnapping case

Jamshedpur: Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Jamshedpur, Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Sahu has launched a sharp attack on the JMM–Congress government and the police administration following the daylight kidnapping of the son of a prominent industrial family.

Terming the incident “alarming and shameful,” Sahu said the kidnapping has exposed how criminals are operating fearlessly in what was once considered one of India’s safest and best-managed industrial cities.

“A daylight abduction clearly shows that criminals no longer fear the police. Jamshedpur is slowly being pushed into the hands of crime,” she asserted.

The MLA said the kidnapping was not an isolated case. Over the past few months, Jamshedpur and its surrounding areas have witnessed a surge in kidnappings, extortion, illegal collections, drug trafficking, thefts, robberies and hooliganism.

“There is a visible atmosphere of fear among common citizens and business communities,” she said.

Taking a dig at the police administration, Purnima Sahu alleged that instead of focusing on serious crimes, the police have limited themselves to helmet checks and issuing challans.

“Law and order cannot be maintained through fine collection alone. It is restored when criminals fear the law and citizens feel secure—both of which are missing today,” she remarked.

She also targeted the state government, pointing out the contradiction between official claims and ground reality.

“On one hand, Chief Minister Hemant Soren is in Davos at the World Economic Forum projecting Jharkhand as a safe and investor-friendly state, while on the other hand, the state’s biggest industrial city is slipping under criminal control,” she said.

Questioning the government’s credibility, she asked how investors could trust a state where kidnappings are happening in broad daylight and the police appear helpless.

The MLA demanded urgent corrective measures to restore law and order and ensure the safety of citizens, traders and investors alike.

Jamshedpur: Terming the abduction of Kairav Gandhi, son of prominent businessman Devang Gandhi, as “deeply disturbing and painful,” former Congress district president Anand Bihari Dubey expressed serious concern over the incident that has shaken the city.

The 24-year-old went missing under suspicious circumstances on January 13, 2026, after his vehicle was found abandoned on a highway.

The family later received a ransom demand of Rs 5 crore from an Indonesian mobile number, details of which have been seized by the police.

Special police teams have been deployed in Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha.

Praising the prompt investigation by the police and the proactive role of the Jharkhand government, Dubey said he hoped the culprits would be arrested soon and Kerav Gandhi recovered safely.

He also affirmed the Congress party’s complete solidarity with the victim’s family.
