Delay threatens students’ career plans, could set back students by two years

Jamshedpur, Nov 30: The students of the 2019 batch of MBBS at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College are facing a serious issue that could delay their careers by two years if the university fails to declare their results by December 15, 2024.
The final-year examinations, which were originally scheduled to conclude in February 2024, finally ended on October 24, 2024. The practical exams followed, wrapping up on November 12, 2024. As a result, the academic session is now delayed by approximately 8 months, leaving the students in a precarious situation regarding their internships and future career plans.
If the results are declared before December 15, the students can begin their mandatory one-year internship by December 31, 2024, which would allow them to complete the internship by December 31, 2025. This timing is critical because only those who finish their internships by the end of 2025 will be eligible to appear for the INICET-AIIMS entrance exam in December 2025. Failure to meet this deadline will prevent the students from taking the exam, pushing their medical careers back by a full year.
In contrast, final-year MBBS students from other medical colleges in Jharkhand, including RIMS, Dhanbad, and Hazaribagh, have already started their internships. RIMS students began their internships on July 2, while those in Dhanbad and Hazaribagh began their internships in August 2024, further highlighting the delay at MGM Medical College.
This delay in MGM’s MBBS session is not an isolated incident. In 2011, the Jharkhand High Court had intervened after illegalities in the construction of the MBBS session calendar led to delays. However, despite the prior warning, the current batch now faces the risk of a two-year setback due to the delayed examination results.
Students of the 2019 batch had already appealed to the University’s Controller of Examinations, requesting that their exams be conducted and results be declared on time to avoid the session delay. However, the issue remains unresolved, and the students are left with no clarity on when their results will be announced.
If the results are delayed beyond December 15, 2024, these students will not only miss the opportunity to appear for the AIIMS exam in December 2025 but will also face a two-year gap before they can enter the next session of medical entrance exams. This delay is a major concern for the students, who are now seeking urgent intervention from university officials to resolve the matter promptly.
