Jamshedpur, March 26: The district administration has undertaken repair work of Mango Bridge better known as Jaiprakash Narayan Setu. The job for the civil work has been bagged by Tata Steel UISL. It has decided to undertake a major repair job (civil) on Mango Jai Prakash Setu from March 25, 22 to April 25, 2022. The nearly 800 meter long Mango bridge was built during the erstwhile Bihar government in 1996.
A meeting with this regard was held between district officials and the company officials. A communique issued by the company said: “ Movement of all heavy commercial vehicles would remain suspended on the Mango new bridge during the period of repair i.e. from 25th March, 22 to 25th April, 22. Incoming /outgoing all the heavy vehicles would be diverted through Dobo bridge.

“There would be a unidirectional flow of traffic on the old Mango bridge and one half of the new Mango bridge. One half of the Mango bridge would remain closed for traffic during the aforesaid mentioned period of repair. Additional deployment of police personnel and security personnel would be ensured for traffic management during the repair period,” company statement said.
This apart, the civic guardian of the city had also repaired the old Mango bridge situated adjacent to the Jayprakash Narayan Setu . Pothole-ridden bridge had turned out to be a nightmare for motorists with two-wheelers falling victims during monsoon.
The potholes and craters were filled by Tata Steel subsidiary after a request from the district administration.
The Rs 6-crore bridge was built in 1996 by the undivided Bihar government and came under the jurisdiction of the state road construction department after Jharkhand was born in 2000.Every day, more than 1,50,000 vehicles — private, public and commercial — cross Jayprakash Narayan Setu, which connects the city to the densely populated Mango and NH-33.
“The bridge is the entry point to the city and is close to our command area. During the course of inspection we found that expansion joints were damaged. During the making of the plan for repair of the Mango bridge we came up with a plan and decided to complete the job in a month. This was necessary as a certain amount of traffic (especially two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and SUVs) would be diverted to the old bridge while repair work is underway at the Jaiprakash Narayan Setu,” said an official.
The old-bridge was in the past repaired with a top-layer of bituminous concrete while the potholes and craters were filled with bituminous macadam (higher aggregate of crushed stones) at a cost of Rs 7.5 lakh.
