Jamshedpur: Social activist Sunil Singh Chauhan and senior leader Manoj Singh Ujjain announced a city-wide campaign demanding legal land ownership rights for residents of 86 informal bastis in Jamshedpur on Sunday.
Addressing a press briefing at Sitaramdera, the leaders stressed that residents need direct legal ownership of their homes, rather than assurances without policy backing. They said the absence of land titles continues to deprive thousands of families of access to home loans, government welfare schemes, and basic civic amenities such as roads, drainage, electricity, and drinking water.
The activists proposed adopting Odisha’s ‘Jaga Mission’ model in Jamshedpur, under which land rights are granted directly to slum and informal settlement residents. According to them, implementing a similar framework would provide long-term security and dignity to urban poor families.
Warning of intensified protests, the leaders said that if the government fails to act promptly, residents would be forced to launch a mass movement to safeguard their homes and livelihoods.
Several prominent activists, including Bhola Singh, Dhirendra Singh, and Saket Singh, were present at the briefing, along with hundreds of supporters from different bastis across the city.
