Jamshedpur Lashed by 140 mm Rain in 3 Days; Monsoon Boosts Greenery but Triggers Flood Woes

Jamshedpur: The monsoon has arrived in full bloom across Jamshedpur, bringing steady rainfall that has replenished groundwater, revived vegetation, and disrupted daily life in equal measure.

Over the past three days, the city has received more than 140 mm of rain, with dark clouds and intermittent downpours keeping temperatures pleasantly cool. While farmers have welcomed the showers as a boon for paddy sowing, urban residents have grappled with severe waterlogging, traffic jams, and power outages.

Low-lying areas such as Mango, Bagbera, Kadma, and Jugsalai have reported waist-deep water accumulation in some lanes. The Kharkai and Subernarekha rivers have risen above the danger mark, prompting officials to issue advisories to families living along the banks.

“The rains are essential for agriculture, but we are also keeping flood response teams ready,” said a district administration official.

Amid the showers, children were seen playing in puddles while shopkeepers struggled to keep water out of their establishments. Civic workers have been working round the clock to clear clogged drains and restore power to affected neighbourhoods.

The Meteorological Department has predicted more rain over the next two days, cautioning residents to remain alert. For now, the monsoon has transformed the cityscape into a lush green vista—while also testing the resilience of its infrastructure.
