Jamshedpur, August 6: Parents play a vital role in the success of their children and the family support is very important in the upbringing of a child. �I could have sent my three children to a good boarding school anywhere in the world but instead i opted for schooling in Jamshedpur because in this steel city they would be growing up with family and Jamshedpur is a great place to bring up a family as facilities upto class 12 here are excellent and can be easily compared to one of the best in the country�, said DR. JJ Irani former MD Tata Steel answering a question by Anushka Singh of Hill Top School class 11 during �Sky is the Limit� program-� a dialogue between students and leaders organized by Tata Business Excellence Group at Tata Auditroium.
Her question was- What is the way to become CEO or MD of a great company like Tata Steel?
Answering the same question TV Narendran, MD Tata Steel said, �One needs to do a lot of hard work and luck also plays a part in elevating a person to the post of CEO�.
Answering a question by Sudipta of Class 12 of Kerala Samajam Model School on how was your childhood and were your parents supportive?
Narendran said, �My school life in Coimbatore was normal as some of the students present in the Auditorium today but during our school days we had enough time to play after the school in the evening. No doubt my parents were very supportive and I was not a troublesome kids but often use to break my legs during play�.
Sweta Mishra of Chinmaya Vidyalaya (South Park) asked about the worst moment in professional life and how did you overcame? Dr. Irani without hesitating replied the fire incident during the March 3, 1989 Founders Day celebrations had made me lament. 60 people died during the incident and there was no fully air conditioned wards like today but we had arranged 60 Air conditioners in 24 hours.
There�s no one definition of a good leader but the one thing which should be paramount in a leader is credibility if he/she wants to be known as great. We should also remember that a leader can�t achieve anything singlehandedly instead work as a team to attain success.
One such example is of Hitler who was an evil man but he is considered as a great leader, said DR. JJ Irani former MD Tata Steel addressing the school students on Thursday.
Dr. Irani said, �Leadership qualities must be inculcated among students from formative years or from the school time. If you practice what you preach that is credibility which is very important if one wants to be a great leader�.
TV Narendran, MD Tata Steel said that apart from credibility, authenticity is also important feature of a leader who is expected to be a role model. Stick to your own principles when odds are against you and have passion for excellence, said Narendran to students adding that be comfortable with yourself, set directions and dream big to be a great leader.
Narendran further said that MS Dhoni is an example of great leader who led his team from front and always talks to the media when team�s performance is not upto the mark but sends team mates to address the media when team puts up a good show.
In the lively dialogue, Dr Irani and TV Narendran fielded over 25 questions from students. The questions covered a wide range of topics from leadership qualities ,challenges faced , highpoints of career ,interests and career choices ,childhood and student experiences , influence of friends ,role models , mentors and family to �smart� Jamshedpur , city expansion and environment. School principals also used the opportunity to ask questions.
Dr JituSingh, Professor,XLRI, felt that leaders should earn the respect of others by being role models and walk the talk.
The program was attended by over 1000students of Classes X to XII, accompanied by teachers and Principals,from over30 schools in Jamshedpur. Mr N K Sharan, Vice President, Tata Business Excellence Group, welcomed the guests and provided the background behind the initiative.
Indeed, the dialogue represented a confluence of Past, Present and Future- the wisdom of Past and Present conversing with the Future of India.
The objective of this initiative is to enable students to interact with accomplished personalities and derive inspiration from them. In the past, Dr. Kalam had interacted withchildren, andearly this year, Dr. Radhkrishnan (ISRO chief) interacted with them.
The children and school communities have highly appreciated these interactions, as children get to see and interact with accomplished people and derive inspiration.
Earlier a minute silence was observed in tribute to former late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Baug-E-Jamsheed principal Shireen Dotivala.
