Jamshedpur: Home ministry team probes elephant’s electrocution

Jamshedpur, November 26: On Sunday, the team of the Union home ministry reached the spot and investigated the case of death of five elephants in Musabani and two elephants in Chakulia after coming under high tension wire.

This team included HV Girisha, joint director of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau of the Home Ministry, and board member N Lakshmi Narayan, conservator for forest P. R Naidu, Jamshedpur Forest Divisional Officer Mamta Priyadarshi, Chakulia Forest Region Officer in-charge Digvijay Singh and officials of the Electricity Department.

It may be noted that a group of elephants had come under the influence of high voltage electric wire on the banks of the pond behind Ganesh Rice Mill in Ward No. 9 of Chakulia Nagar Panchayat. Two of these elephants were injured. Within 24 hours, both the elephants died at different places.

 This team reached the pond behind Ganesh Rice Mill and investigated the matter closely. After this the team reached the field near Jwalbhanga village of Badamara Panchayat, where an elephant had died. Here the team also interrogated the nearby villagers.

The second elephant died in the cashew forest adjacent to Lakhan Chowk near Machadiha in Jamua Panchayat. The team reached here also and investigated the incident site. HV Girish told that the team is investigating why elephants are continuously dying, who is responsible for it and how it can be prevented. Before this, this team investigated the case of death of five elephants due to high tension wire near Uparabandha of Musabani at the spot. There also the team interrogated the villager in this regard.
