Jamshedpur FC players celebrate Christmas with cultural traditions

Jamshedpur, December 24: As the holiday season brings joy across the globe, the players of Jamshedpur FC are embracing their cultural roots by celebrating Christmas with time-honored traditions, creating a warm, family-like atmosphere within the team.

Albino Gomes, a Goan native, celebrates Christmas deeply embedded in the traditions of Goa. This year, the occasion holds added significance, coinciding with the rare Exposition of Saint Francis Xavier in Goa, a once-in-a-decade event that showcases the incorrupt body of the saint, preserved for over 400 years. Albino fondly recalls his childhood Christmas memories of crafting cribs, enjoying Goan delicacies like Navrio and Dodol, and singing carols. “Christmas is a huge festival in Goa,” he says, reminiscing about the blessings of sweets and money received during carol singing. He also cherishes attending prayers at the Jesus Mary and Joseph Church in Nuvem, Goa.

For the Spanish duo of Javier Hernandez and Siverio, Christmas celebrations are marked by a festive feast of ham, roast suckling pork, seafood, cheese, and Spanish wine. The players follow the tradition of wearing red, a symbol of celebration, and take part in the Spanish New Year custom of eating 12 grapes at midnight. “For us, Christmas is a family celebration,” said Javier, reflecting on his visits to the Church of San Vicente Martir in Spain. Although both miss their families during the holidays, they find comfort and joy in the camaraderie at Jamshedpur FC, which makes them feel at home.
Despite being away from home, the players stay connected with their families through video calls, sharing the warmth and joy of the festive season. Their unique celebrations foster a sense of unity and joy among the team, highlighting the importance of togetherness during the holidays.
