Jamshedpur: Experts stress sustainable living at DBMS College workshop

Small steps towards sustainability can bring big change: Dr Prabhat Singh

National workshop on green energy and sustainable development held 

Jamshedpur, March 14: National-level workshop on “Green Energy and Green Technology: The Future of Sustainable Development” was organised at DBMS College of Education in Jamshedpur in collaboration with the Koru Foundation. Students and faculty members from colleges across Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal participated in the programme.

Dr. B. Chandrasekhar, Chairperson of DBMS Trust, highlighted the importance of collective efforts in achieving sustainable development and encouraged participants to work together for environmental conservation.

Chief Guest Dr. Prabhat Singh, Coordinator of the Vocational Cell, Kolhan University appreciated the initiative and said that such workshops ideally deserved to be conducted over three days to allow deeper discussion on the subject. He emphasised that even small steps towards sustainability could lead to major long-term change. Citing an example, he mentioned that the biogas-operated mess at Tata Steel has continued to function effectively even during difficult times, demonstrating the reliability of green energy.

Dr. Amar Kumar, Senate Member and noted academician, said that nature holds solutions to many of humanity’s challenges and stressed the need to promote research and curiosity among young people to develop sustainable solutions.

Environmental activist Gaurav Anand, Director of Swachhata Pukare, explained how biogas production can be initiated even at the household level, including in balconies. He also discussed the technology of plastic roads and demonstrated how water hyacinth can be recycled to produce useful items such as sarees, files and folders.

Garima Rohilla highlighted the importance of behavioural change, noting that India generates nearly 170,000 tonnes of waste daily but only about 35 percent is scientifically treated.

Resource person Acharya Nihar Ranjan from Odisha explained references from the Gita, Puranas and Vedas related to sustainability.

Dr. Vikrant Tiwari, Director of adivasi.org, said nearly 1.5 million trees have been planted through the initiative without government aid. During a quiz, he encouraged educated individuals to take initiatives for a greener future.

During the event, B.Ed. students presented innovative models on green energy and environmental conservation, while Amrita Choudhary’s team performed an environmental song. Present on the occasion were Secretary of the College Sripriya Dharmarajan, Joint Secretary Sudha Dilip, Administrative Secretary Satish Singh, Principal Dr. Joohi Samarpita, Vice-Principal Dr. Monica Uppal, faculty members, and staff.
