Jamshedpur: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jamshedpur Centre, hosted a one-day seminar on “Eco-Innovations for a Sustainable Future” today at the SNTI Auditorium. Experts from academia and industry gathered to discuss the urgent need for sustainable engineering to combat climate change and rapid urbanization.

Leaders Call for Sustainable Action
Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Goutam Sutradhar, Director of NIT Jamshedpur, opened the event alongside Session Chairman Vineet Kumar Sah (Tata Steel).
Sah warned that reactive environmental measures are no longer enough. He urged engineers to lead the transition to sustainable development. Dr. Sutradhar added that true engineering sustainability must prioritize long-term societal impact, waste minimization, and reduced carbon footprints.
Key Technical Insights
The seminar featured five expert-led sessions covering the future of green technology:
- Role of Engineers: Prof. Anil Kumar Choudhary (NIT Jamshedpur) outlined five principles of sustainable engineering: resource efficiency, environmental impact, social responsibility, lifecycle perspective, and collaboration.
- Hydrogen Energy: Dr. Anupam Kumari (Arka Jain University) discussed hydrogen’s potential as a clean energy carrier for production and storage.
- Sustainable Maintenance: Mr. G. R. P. Singh (Tata Steel) explained how behavioral changes in maintenance practices build resilient industrial systems.
- Thermal Engineering: Dr. Alok Kumar Ray (NIT Jamshedpur) showcased innovations in “Phase Change Materials” for industrial sustainability.
- Waste Management: Dr. Dulari Hansdah (NIT Jamshedpur) presented a method for converting medical plastic waste into useful energy.
A Collaborative Success
Over 70 participants attended, including scholars from NIT Jamshedpur, Arka Jain University, and NTTF, as well as professionals from Tata Steel, CSIR-NML, and TSUISL.
The event concluded with a valedictory session led by Dr. Seeram Madhuri, Honorary Secretary of IE(I), who distributed certificates and thanked the attendees for making the seminar a success.
