Jamshedpur: In a significant move aimed at controlling the spread of Thalassemia and ensuring timely access to necessary medical resources, District Magistrate cum Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal has announced the formation of a District Core Committee. This committee is tasked with raising public awareness about Thalassemia and ensuring the availability of blood for affected patients across East Singhbhum.
The committee will be led by the Deputy Development Commissioner, with the Civil Surgeon of East Singhbhum serving as the Secretary. Other key members include officers from the District Administration as well as founding members of the Thalassemia Society of Jamshedpur. The committee’s composition is designed to bring together a broad range of expertise, including: District Panchayati Raj Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, District Education Officer, District Education Superintendent, District Sub Registrar and Sub Registrar Ghatshila, Nominated members of the Thalassemia Society of Jamshedpur, including its President Sharat Chandran, Indrajit Paul from Tata Steel, Dr. Amit Chatterjee from the Rotary Club, Rajneesh Kumar, former District Governor of Lions International and State Task Force member on Disability Management, Sanjay Chaudhary, General Manager of Jamshedpur Blood Bank, Smita Raj Parikh, hotelier and industrialist, Sunil Mukherjee, President of the Voluntary Blood Donor Association, and Jitesh Kumar
The first meeting of the core committee is scheduled to be held shortly, where members will discuss potential risks and formulate an effective action plan. This initiative aims to extend the Thalassemia awareness campaign throughout the district, ensuring comprehensive and proactive measures are implemented.
Thalassemia, a rapidly spreading hereditary blood disorder, leads to a severe deficiency of hemoglobin—a crucial protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen. The disorder results in the destruction of a large number of red blood cells, leading to anemia. The campaign’s objectives include increasing awareness among parents and guardians, identifying new cases, implementing proactive measures, and ensuring pre-conception testing is conducted during marriage registration.
